Amazing views from Villa Comunale
Wander through a maze of narrow lanes, beneath stone arches and along stairways lined with flower pots and iron balconies. During the day, the town is peaceful and slow. Find a shady bench in the Villa Comunale, the town’s park, and take in the sweeping views of the countryside, scattered with trulli, vineyards, and olive groves.
In the early evening, the mood shifts. Locals gather on the square, children play nearby, and the terraces slowly begin to fill. The scent of grilled meat drifting through the air reveals what Cisternino is truly famous for.
This clock tower, known as the Torre dell’Orologio, is a recognizable symbol of the village. It marks the heart of the historic center and is a beloved spot for both locals and visitors to pause, take in the surroundings, or enjoy a drink at one of the terraces.
Cisternino’s secret: try ‘bombette’ from one of its butchers
The town’s butchers are legendary. Step inside and you’ll find a mouthwatering selection of homemade sausages, skewers, and the beloved bombette – small rolls of pork stuffed with cheese, ham, herbs, or a touch of spice. Your choices go straight onto the grill. Moments later, you’ll be seated outdoors at a simple table, a carafe of local wine beside you and a plate of sizzling, flavorful bites in front of you. No fuss – just honest, local cooking at its best.
